ABOUT

I specialise in handmade, functional ceramics with a rustic and textural style. My passion for creating unique and beautiful pottery drives me to handcraft each piece with care and dedication.
Infusing functionality with artistic expression, everything is a one-off piece not likely to be repeated.

I work from my home studio where I indulge in all things clay; from throwing, to slab-building, slip-casting and hand-building. Although getting my hands stuck in the muddy clay is my passion, I trained in Fine Art and occasionally dabble in drawing, painting and printmaking from time to time.

INSPIRATION

I am greatly inspired by the colours, patterns and textures found in nature. I enjoy walks through parks and beautiful scenery that inspire the layered tones I use in my pieces. I collect leaves and flowers of various shapes and textures to use within my work and often spend time sketching from observation to capture these moments in time.

PROCESS

The various leaves, flowers and other natural objects I find on my walks are used to press into the surface of the clay for the slab-built pieces, such as plates, jewellery dishes and spoon rests. I use a needle to gently remove the objects without disturbing the indentation of the pattern.

I love to explore a range of processes, from wheel-throwing to hand-building and slip-casting. I will use dried clay, usually stoneware or porcelain, to create either reclaim and recycle clay or create casting slip to use with various plaster moulds. I use a range of tools to carve texture into the surface of the clay while it is leather hard. I enjoy carving texture with spontaneity to give it a more rustic effect, rather than precise and measured.

GLAZING

The unpredictability of the glazing process can at times be nerve-wracking. However, I love to layer various colours to create a more dynamic effect on my pieces. I use every scrap of glaze, even the dried bits at the bottom of an empty tub, to create a pool of colour at the bottom of a dish.
